The Specialized Crosstrail range of high-performance hybrids is aimed fairly firmly towards those who are looking for a bike that will be as happy off the road as on. With 45mm tyres and suspension forks throughout the range, these bikes are ideally suited to those who enjoy exploring off the beaten track.
At the same time, a Crosstrail will take you just as happily to work or college with the minimum of fuss - in fact many owners have reported just that. The state of many modern roads will be no problem, as the shock absorbing ability of the Crosstrail will cope easily.
All six bikes in the range are built onto the same A1 Premium aluminium frame. There's no mistaking the signature Specialized look - sleek lines, stunning colour finishes and striking graphics. Specialized are obviously conscious of practical issues, as the frame will accept racks and mudguards. There's also a fitting for a kickstand.
Suspension forks also feature on all the models. Manufactured by Suntour, they increase in quality as you go up the range. The Sport Disc, Comp Disc, Pro Disc and LTD Disc models all feature lockout forks to improve their performance on the road.
The basic Crosstrail carries V-brakes, all other models have discs, either mechanical, or hydraulic on the top-of-the-range models. Hydraulics often makes it easier to apply the high braking power of a disc system. Discs have the obvious advantage that the brake surfaces are kept drier and cleaner, enhancing efficiency and reducing wear.
All the versions have triple chainrings, so there are plenty of ratios available for getting up difficult hills. The number of gears increases from 21 to 27 through the range.
The 700mm wheels ensure efficient running on the road. The smooth face of the 45C tyres keeps rolling resistance low, while the tread on the side provides enough grip for the grass and gravel.
The gentle rise to the handlebars results in a particularly comfortable seating position, and comfort is increased through the fitting of a Body Geometry saddle.
So there's a useful range of options within the Specialized Crosstrail range. They all have the same design approach - performance bikes that will suit the commuter, but being equally at home spending more time off the beaten track than average.
There's no doubt that the entry-level Crosstrail is a lot of bike for the money. Weighing less than 14kg, and with a suspension fork, it could be the ideal bike for many. But the increasing quality and performance as you go up the range will be tempting for those with the budget. At the very least, the small amount extra for the Disc model will be well spent. At the top of the range, the LTD Disc model, with Shimano Deore components and magnesium forks is among the best you can buy.
